For this new episode of our series of conversations with inspiring women, artist, model, and poet Ella Eckersley opened the doors of her London studio to us. Through the lens of photographer Rhys Williams, we explore how creativity, travel, and modeling mutually enrich each other.
From painting to poetry, and the art of dressing instinctively, Ella tells us how she finds the space to create, where she draws her inspiration, and why slowing down can sometimes be just as important as moving forward.
How does modeling influence your art? Or does your art nourish your modeling work? Perhaps both?
Modeling has definitely shaped my art in many ways, even influencing the size and materials I use, which sometimes need to be practical enough to travel with me.
I think traveling for work, often alone, has made me much more observant and fueled my interest in capturing others in their daily lives. I'm incredibly fortunate to have had the time and experiences to do this.
I've also used writing and poetry a lot as a therapeutic outlet for some of the more challenging aspects of modeling. It really helped me step back and better understand what I was experiencing.
Is there a way of dressing that instantly makes you feel like Ella the artist, Ella the model, or Ella the poet?
I have a whole collection of paint-covered clothes that immediately make me feel like Ella the artist. I'd say Ella the model is more recognizable in casting outfits or comfortable travel looks.
So that leaves Ella the poet... who must be the one who simply wears her favorite clothes!
How does your creative work influence your way of dressing, and how has this evolved over time?
